The Toxic Truth About The Underwear Industry

The Toxic Truth About The Underwear Industry

Most underwear is made with plastics and chemicals you'd never choose to put on your body.

  • Trap Heat & Moisture

Less breathable, creating a damp environment where bacterial and yeast can thrive.

  • Contain PFAS

They don’t break down easily and can accumulate in our bodies and the environment.

  • Shed Microplastics

Plastic fabrics can shed microscopic fibers into your skin and your environment.

We Made Something That Supports Your Health

“As a former cosmetic chemist, I read labels for a living and CUFT is one of the few intimates brands that actually passes my test. No greenwashing just genuinely clean materials against your skin where it matters most while every piece feels so soft on the skin.”

“I've been wearing Cuft's non-toxic underwear for a while now and they're extremely comfortable. The fabric is soft, feels like it's barely there, and unlike a lot of underwear I've tried, they actually stay put and don't ride up. I love that they're made without the toxic chemicals found in a lot of conventional underwear!”

“I am so happy this brand exists. My go-to for super soft basics that are healthy for the skin. As a microplastics expert, the first thing I tell people is to wear organic cotton underwear. But there are so few brands really doing it right. It’s such a relief to excitedly point people to CUFT. Will be a longterm supporter!!”

“It's hard to find underwear that is truly ONE HUNDRED PERCENT non-toxic! Even my 2nd-fave cotton brand has at least 10% plastic-based materials. Cuft proves even that 10% is not necessary for a perfectly fitting, super comfortable, well-made pair. I love how lightweight they feel. On a mission to replace the whole drawer.”

Meet CUFT®

As a mother-daughter team, Elizabeth and Gabrielle have always been sensitive to the health and well-being of the women around them. They were born to a line of strong, smart, selfless and thoughtful Italian women who oftentimes put loved ones' care in front of their own. Inspired by their familial traditions, travels and local charity work, Elizabeth and Gabrielle sought out to create a purposeful brand made for women's health. CUFT® is a female necessity; a garment that caters to the health of women in whatever capacity she may need.

Before trading the lab for a camera and building @byrosehall, a community rooted in clean eating, non-toxic living, and intentional motherhood. Becoming a first-time mom to her son sharpened a question she'd been asking her whole career: what are we actually putting on and around our bodies, and does the marketing match the ingredient list? That same question is why she joined CUFT® as an Educational Advisor. Underwear is one of the most constant points of contact between fabric and skin, and Rose brings a chemist's eye to the materials, construction, and claims behind it.

Her role is to help make CUFT®'s education clear, credible, and free of the buzzwords, so people can understand what they're wearing and why it matters, without needing a science degree to follow along.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes CUFT® underwear different?

CUFT® is redefining what clean underwear really means.

While most “clean” brands only focus on part of the garment, every inch of CUFT is made with 100% TENCEL™, a naturally soft, breathable, and biodegradable fabric derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp.

We’ve created a certified non-toxic underwear, from fabric to waistband. The garment is completely free of PFAS, microplastics, and harsh dyes or chemicals.

No hidden synthetics. No compromises. Just comfort that’s as safe for your body as it is for the planet.

How is CUFT® underwear compostable?

Most underwear is designed for durability using synthetic, plastic-based materials that never break down. CUFT® takes a different approach prioritizing non-toxic, plant-based materials that are safe for your body and can return to the earth at the end of their life.

CUFT® is made without synthetic fibers, elastane, or traditional plastic-based elastic. Even the waistband is made from a biodegradable TPU designed to break down over time, making the entire garment aligned with our plastic-free mission.

What dyes are used in your underwear?

Our dyes are OEKO-TEX® certified and bluesign® approved, meaning they are tested and verified to be free from harmful substances such as:

  • Azo dyes
  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates

They are safe for sensitive skin and meet strict global safety standards.

What’s so special about TENCEL™?

Our underwear and camisoles are made from 100% TENCEL™, a wood-based, plant-derived fiber known for its breathability and softness. Unlike most underwear, which is made with synthetic materials (aka plastic), CUFT® is designed to be a lower-tox alternative that’s gentle on your body.

TENCEL™ fibers are produced using a closed-loop solvent spinning process. The non-toxic organic solvent is recovered and reused at a rate of over 99%, meaning it doesn’t remain in the final fiber.
